The Uprising

War and plague are devastating 14th-century England when a humble peasant ignites a rebellion. He unites an army of commoners to defy the King's might in a desperate fight for justice and survival. The tagline, "Rise or die", sets the terms: this is a historical drama shot through with action, about commoners going up against a crown.

Andrew Garfield plays the Ploughman, with Jamie Bell as John Ball, Cosmo Jarvis as Wat Tyler, Tom Hollander as Sir Robert Hales and Woody Norman as Richard II of England; Katherine Waterston appears as Joan of Kent. Paul Greengrass directs, after The Bourne Ultimatum and Captain Phillips. It runs 2h 8m and is rated R, so the fighting is not sanitised.
