Morfa Halen is a small Welsh town wedged between mountains and a sea that is steadily eating into it. As a once-in-a-generation storm gathers offshore, Jackie Ellis, a former detective now working as a teacher, finds the body of Cefin, her 8-year-old pupil, apparently drowned. The death reopens the wound the town never healed: the disappearance of Jackie's niece, Nessa, three years earlier, a case that ended her police career.
